The Pharmaceutical Department, Tokyo Rosai Hospital
Introduction
The Pharmaceutical Department performs various tasks under the basic policies of “providing safe and effective drug therapy,” “practicing safe management and safe use of medicines,” and “promoting proper use of medicines.” However, it is important to note that while recent pharmaceuticals have highly effective properties, many of them can have the opposite effect if not used with sufficient understanding. In addition, the effects of pharmaceuticals can be enhanced or weakened by other pharmaceuticals, or the effects of diet and the use of health foods and supplements can affect the effectiveness of pharmaceuticals. If you have any questions or concerns about the medications prescribed at our hospital, please do not hesitate to visit the pharmacy counter. Our pharmacy staff will be happy to assist you in a friendly and courteous manner.

Duties of Pharmacy
Dispensing
The hospital promotes the issuance of outpatient prescriptions, and the Pharmacy Department dispenses medicines mainly for hospitalized patients. In doing so, we make sure that the dosage, dosage regimen, and combination of medications are appropriate.
Dispensing of injections
In the dispensing of injections, we check for contraindications (drugs that should not be mixed), dosage, dosage rate, and duration of administration of prescribed medications, taking into consideration various circumstances such as the patient’s laboratory values, age, weight, fever, and food intake. Any doubts here are also checked with the physician to ensure that more appropriate injectable medications are used safely.
Duties in hospital wards
We meet with hospitalized patients and their families to confirm the contents of medications, over-the-counter medications, health foods, etc. that they have brought with them, as well as the status of their medications and how they are taken together. We also check the patient’s history of allergies and side effects. Before using any medication, we check the patient’s disease, symptoms, age, physique, kidney and liver functions, etc., and make sure that there are no problems with dosage and administration rate, or with the combination of injectable and oral medications.
We visit the bedside of hospitalized patients and explain to patients and their families how to take the medicines and their effects so that they can take them safely and securely. We also strive for early detection of side effects.
Aseptic Preparation
Anticancer drugs are prepared in the Pharmacy Department after confirming that the dosage and administration interval are appropriate to support safe and effective cancer treatment. In addition, injectable drugs that serve as a source of nutrition for patients who are unable to take meals are prepared aseptically in the Pharmacy Department.
Provision of Information on Medicines
We collect various information on pharmaceuticals, evaluate the information, and provide the information to patients, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. We also manage cases of adverse drug reactions that have occurred at our hospital and report them to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the hospital’s pharmaceutical affairs committee.
Participation in Team Medicine
In order to demonstrate the expertise of pharmacists and contribute to medical care, we participate in team medical care such as palliative care, infection control, nutritional support, diabetes, bedsores, and safety measures.
