The Department of Rradiation therapy, Tokyo Rosai Hospital
Our hospital has more than 2,000 cases of radiation therapy since the first case in June 1984. On November 11, 2019, we resumed treatment as the “Radiation Therapy Department” with new equipment. We will continue to strive to contribute to local medical care.
Radiation therapy is one of the three major cancer treatment methods, along with surgery and chemotherapy. With the advent of equipment and technology that concentrates radiation on cancer, the accuracy of radiation therapy is rapidly improving. Since radiation is only applied to the cancer and its surroundings, it is possible to preserve the function and shape of organs. In recent years, with the increase in the number of patients and the aging of the population, radiation therapy has attracted attention as a cancer treatment that puts less strain on the body.
In radiation therapy, cancer is treated with radiation such as high-energy X-rays and electron beams. These are common types of radiation used in cancer treatment. Treatment is performed once a day, five days a week. Approximately 20-35 sessions are required to control cancer. It also plays a major role in relieving symptoms associated with cancer, such as pain and bleeding in advanced cancers. In this case, the treatment will be scheduled for about 10 sessions, and depending on the condition, it may be completed in 1-5 sessions. The appropriate radiation dose and number of sessions will vary depending on the disease and treatment method. A radiation oncologist will make an individual judgment and explain the procedure during the consultation. In many cases, treatment can be done on an outpatient basis, so please consult with us about balancing your work and daily life. If anticancer drugs or other drugs are used in combination or if it is difficult to visit the hospital, treatment will be performed on an inpatient basis after consultation with the department of each disease.
The treatment policy is decided in cooperation with other departments at the cancer board and conference. We also participate in the hospital’s palliative care team, and we monitor the progress after radiation therapy and identify patients who are suitable for radiation therapy at any time.
Our hospital has introduced a high-precision radiation therapy device called “True Beam.” In addition, we have installed an infrared camera navigation system and an X-ray imaging system to perform high-precision and quick positioning. We also have a respiratory synchronization system. We can perform intensity-modulated radiation therapy, which is a high-precision radiation therapy, and stereotactic irradiation of the lungs, brain, bones, liver, prostate, etc. Treatment planning is done using Ray Station and Eclipse, and wide-bore 64-row CT scans are used for imaging. Using these, we create optimal treatment plans for each patient.
Daily medical care is done jointly by a full-time radiation oncologist, a dedicated nurse, a clinical radiologist, and a receptionist. A support system is also in place with part-time radiation oncologists and medical physicists. We hold regular conferences to share information and improve knowledge and skills.
*We apologize for the inconvenience, but our department operates on a referral reservation system (only from medical institutions). If you wish to be examined, please contact the Regional Medical Cooperation Office in advance. In the case of an emergency, we can respond even on the same day. Please consult us by phone. You can also just consult us about the suitability of the department.
